RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Imagine having over five feet of hair streaming down your back.
Reuben Lux Twice Jr. said he is proud to represent the Lakota Nation after earning the Guinness World Records title as the “teenage male with the longest hair in the world.”
“It’s not every day that you can call yourself a Guinness World Records holder and it is a great source of pride for me and for our home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,” said his father, Reuben Lux Twice Sr.
Ruben is 5ft 3.3in tall and has had hair that has been growing since he was 2 years old, when his parents decided to let him grow it out because he was afraid of clippers.
“I guess it all started when my parents told me not to cut my hair. I saw so many people really liked my hair and said things like, ‘Your hair is lovely,’ or ‘Your hair is so long,'” Guinness World Records holder Ruben Lux Twice Jr. said.
Ruben’s father says the hair symbolizes strength and a connection to one’s ancestors.
“In Lakota tradition, when you grow your hair like this and put it in a knot or braid, each knot represents a family member and when you wear it, it gives you strength for anything you do and wherever you go in life,” Lux Twice Sr. said.
Ruben hopes his world record will make his family and tribe proud.
“It’s part of his identity. Long hair and all that. It’s who he is. So people see his last name, Lux Twice, they see his long hair and they say, ‘Oh, that boy’s Native American,’ or ‘That boy’s Lakota,'” Lux Twice Sr. said.
Ruben says he loves his long hair and has no plans to cut it anytime soon.
