SEPANG, June 21 (Bernama) — Bahrain’s King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa left for Manama today at the end of a three-day visit to the country to attend the coronation ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the 17th King of Malaysia.
The plane carrying Sheikh Hamad and his delegation took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Ben-Garaya Complex at 12:06pm.
The send-off ceremony was attended by Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar, Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar among others.
Also in attendance were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Bahrain’s Ambassador to Malaysia Waleed Khalifa Al Manea.
Before boarding the plane, Sheikh Hamad, accompanied by Tunku Idris, walked in front of a stationary honour procession made up of two officers and 24 members of the 1st Battalion, Royal Rangers Regiment (Ceremonial Infantry), led by Captain Raja Azli Shahir Raja Mohamed Zulkifli.
Yesterday, the King of Bahrain and Sultan of Brunei, His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah, attended the inauguration ceremony at Istana Negara and a royal banquet in the evening.
Their presence was greatly appreciated by Sultan Ibrahim, who expressed his gratitude in his inauguration speech.
The historic event was attended by around 700 guests, including Malay rulers, governors, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and foreign dignitaries.
During his visit to Malaysia, Sheikh Hamad received a courtesy call from President Anwar and the two discussed efforts to strengthen cooperation between Malaysia and Bahrain in various fields for mutual benefit.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Bahrain began in 1974 and were further strengthened with the opening of the Malaysian Embassy in Bahrain in 2003 and the Bahraini Embassy in Malaysia in 2017.
