With Vice President Kamala Harris announcing her candidacy for the nation’s highest office, the world has officially become a woman’s world, and pop star Katy Perry is eyeing an opportunity to give a second life to her critically panned comeback single, “Woman’s World.”
Perry posted a video on Monday of herself sipping a cocktail while singing the song’s lyrics, “It’s a woman’s world, you’re lucky to live in it,” in what many assumed was a show of support for Harris’ presidential campaign. She also endorsed Biden and Harris in 2020.
“That’s it. That’s the caption,” she wrote under the video.
Perry later reposted an Instagram Story of a supercut of Harris’ most popular quotes, soundtracked by “Woman’s World.”
Harris has become something of a pop culture icon in recent years, with memes featuring her quirky comments about falling from a “coconut tree” or smearing butter on a Thanksgiving turkey circulating the Internet. But her pop music status skyrocketed on Sunday night when Charli XCX became the first pop star to endorse her in promotion of her new album, “Brat,” since Biden stopped campaigning.
“Kamala is a brat,” XCX tweeted. Harris’ official campaign account quickly capitalized on the tweet’s popularity, changing X’s header to match the album’s signature green color.
This sparked a trend on TikTok, with users pairing supercuts of Harris’ speech with music from artists including XCX, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kesha, Chappelle Roan and Kim Petras, The New York Times reported.
For Perry, whose 2013 hit “Roar” played a major role in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign against Trump, Harris’ election is a chance to regain public favor. In addition to the pan-pandemic, Perry was also criticized for working with producer Dr. Luke, who has been accused of sexual assault by singer Kesha, on a song about women’s empowerment.
Given Clinton’s defeat in the presidential election, it may be best for Harris to distance herself from Perry’s activities in the run up to November’s election.
