WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Thousands of people are crossing U.S. Highway 21 from Harmony, North Carolina to Wytheville, Virginia for the annual 100 Mile Road Market.
I started my day at a local church on the side of the highway, the guys there told me they’ve been doing this for a few years now and it’s a great way to raise extra money for the church each year.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” said Linda Brinkley, a vendor at Galilee Church. “We meet a lot of people from different states. [who] Come through here.”
Then I walked down the road to a side street lined with vendors, where I talked to a man from Tennessee who was here for the street market.
“Here’s today’s prize,” said Frank Tizer, showing off the art he’d purchased. “It’s from the Bradford Exchange. It’s ten dollars. It’s really beautiful.”
We then met another man from Indiana who told us he was traveling all over the US to visit these markets.
“We’re going to Michigan,” he said. “They [US] If you take Highway 12 [US Highway] 38. We only go to garage sales along the highway. This is the first year we’ve attended.
People who live along the highway say they look forward to this weekend every year. Nancy Skeens – Vendor
“I love meeting people. There are really nice people here,” said Nancy Skeens, a vendor at the market. “They’re from North Carolina, West Virginia, all kinds of places.”
“We’ve been doing this for nine years now, and we have a lot of people that come back every year,” said Missy Irvin, another sales associate, “We have customers from all over – Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia.”
