TOWSON, Maryland, July 26, 2024 – The International Association of Machinists, Aerospace Workers (IAM CORE) Coalition of Retail Employees has reached a tentative agreement with Apple Inc. that will help improve work-life balance, raise wages and ensure job security. Workers at Apple’s Towson, Maryland, store, the first in the country to unionize, are scheduled to vote on the tentative agreement on August 6.
“From the beginning, IAM CORE’s mission has been to make Apple better for our employees, customers and communities,” the IAM CORE bargaining committee said. “Reaching a tentative agreement with Apple gives our members a say in the future and takes a strong first step toward greater gains. Together, we will build on this success store by store and grow the force IAM CORE started here in Maryland.”
Highlights of the interim three-year agreement include:
– Work-life balance: Improve schedules while protecting both current and part-time members.
– Pay Increases: Average 10% pay increases over the life of the contract, with 80% of positions receiving an increase in starting salary.
– Job security: Contract employee restrictions and severance clauses.
– Transparency: fair and clear disciplinary procedures with safeguards and accountability.
The agreement maintains all current benefits and includes an agreement to negotiate future additions.
“A true partnership between IAM, IAM CORE and Apple workers has brought us this historic moment,” said David Sullivan, IAM Eastern District Vice President. “IAM District 4 Business Representative Jay Wadley and others brought their knowledge, experience and tenacity to these negotiating days, and we are incredibly proud to be the first union to take on this fight on behalf of Apple workers.”
IAM CORE represents approximately 85 employees at Apple’s retail store in Towson, Maryland. IAM CORE members, who became the first Apple retail store in the United States to organize a union in June 2022, have been negotiating with Apple management since January 2023. In May 2024, as management continued to delay negotiations, IAM CORE members overwhelmingly approved strike sanctions against Apple.
The International Union of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is one of the largest and most diverse industrial unions in North America, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airline, rail, transportation, healthcare, automotive and other industries.
