Pinarello has unveiled a new version of its Bolida F TT bike, which reduces drag by 2.28% compared to its predecessor, created to give Michal Kwiatkowski (POLAND), Magnus Sheffield (USA), current European Time Trial Champion Josh Tarling (GREAT BRITAIN), and former World Time Trial Champions Tobias Voss (NORWAY) and Filippo Ganna (ITALY) every advantage in the Individual Time Trials at the Paris Olympic Games.
The drag reduction is achieved through two design features: AirStream AeroNodes and AirFoil sections.
Inspired by the protrusions on humpback whale fins, AirStream AeroNodes are integrated into the seat tube and seatpost to improve airflow by reducing complex vortexes created by a rider’s leg movement.
The AirFoil sections of the bottom bracket and wheel hub are longer and slimmer to reduce frontal area.
Bucking trend, Pinarello says they found that adding space between the fork and tire didn’t improve aerodynamics as much as keeping the total frontal area as slim as possible, so they increased the fork crown width slightly, but only to increase tire clearance from 28mm to 32mm.
It also gets the little “fork flap tips” from the Dogma F, giving it a small trailing edge behind the front axle for even more progressive gains.
The fork legs and seat stays have also been slimmed down and strengthened to maintain rigidity in those sections for maximum power transfer.
The cockpit has been optimized to maximise the aerodynamics of not only the cockpit itself, but also that of the rider and bike.
Finally, we improved the aero bottle, cage and position and made some more gains.
Each rider will ride a Bolida F TT in a special Luxter Red Gold and Luxter Blue colorway, with the rider’s nationality inscribed on the seat tube. The rest of the riders will be available in four frame sizes, and in a full Dura-Ace Di2 “Games” spec later this year. Pricing is yet to be determined.
