Google has recently sparked controversy by omitting search results related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. People searching for information about the assassination attempt were confused when the search engine did not return the results they expected. Instead, the website’s autocomplete feature ignored any mention of the July 13 shooting, leading the former president’s son to accuse the company of trying to rig the election.

Users were surprised when Google’s autocomplete feature didn’t return any results related to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump: Typing “assassination attempt” yielded no suggestions related to the July 13 incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, that shocked the nation.

The omission has sparked frustration, with Donald Trump Jr. accusing tech companies led by Sundar Pichai of deliberately manipulating search results to influence the upcoming election. The fact that Autocomplete gave no hint about the event has left Republicans concerned that there may be bias in the way the story is presented.

As the US prepares for the November 2024 presidential election, with Kamala Harris officially announcing her candidacy and President Joe Biden endorsing her as his successor, while Donald Trump seeks a return to the White House, Google’s latest update to its search tool comes amid a lot of political drama, especially since Trump said on social media that he “took a bullet for democracy” after criticizing the testimony of FBI Director Christopher Wray.

“Big Tech is once again trying to interfere in our election to help Kamala Harris. We all know this was deliberate election interference by Google. This is despicable,” Donald Trump Jr. wrote on his X account.

According to Fox News, which reviewed numerous screenshots from users around the world, Google’s search suggestions included a variety of historical events, such as the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the shooting of Bob Marley and the failed plot against former President Gerald Ford, rather than recent incidents involving Donald Trump.

Google’s response

After Texas Rep. Donald Trump Jr. and his fans pointed out the issue, a spokesperson told The Washington Post that they had not made any manual changes to these search suggestions. The system has built-in safeguards that block autocomplete suggestions about political violence, the spokesperson said. But users noted that this was not the case when searching for assassination attempts on other politicians, including John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and Teddy Roosevelt.

“We are working on improvements to make our system more up to date. Of course, autocomplete is just a tool to save users time, and they can continue to search for anything. After this egregious act, users have turned to Google to find quality information. We provide users with useful results and will continue to do so.”
