Theme: Heatwave
Over the past decade, the world has experienced record-breaking temperatures and heat waves. The effects of these heat waves have been particularly pronounced in the Gulf Coast region, which is known for experiencing extremely high temperatures during the summer months.
Bahrainis traditionally migrate to the southern desert regions during the winter and return to the coast or near inland water sources during the hot summer months. This extends to a variety of occupations, with farmers, artisans and traders moving frequently to optimize their work through the seasons. This seasonal migration pattern is common throughout the Gulf, and the lack of heating and cooling technologies allowed communities to live seasonally in the most favorable local climatic conditions. This migration pattern is repeated at the household scale, with people sleeping on rooftops during the summer to make the most of the coastal breezes.
It is estimated that human survival becomes difficult when the wet bulb temperature exceeds 35°C*, and heatstroke mortality rates in people aged 65 and over have already increased by approximately 85% between 2000-2004 and 2017-2021.**
Today’s challenges linked to climate change and global warming are numerous and need to be tackled simultaneously at architectural and urban level: from rethinking the insulating properties of building materials to how cities are conceived against extreme heat. The urgency of the situation requires us to fundamentally rethink how we build; to, as the exhibition curator Carlo Ratti says, “explore the definition of ‘intelligence’ as the ability to adapt to the environment with limited resources, knowledge and strength” and, perhaps, to reconsider locally ancestral models of transition as a way of adaptation and flexibility in the face of extreme weather conditions.
We are calling for multidisciplinary teams to provide innovative, pragmatic and locally based responses to these global challenges that have enormous regional impacts and need to be addressed with utmost urgency. As Ratti stated, this is an invitation to address a common challenge: “one place, one solution”, one that “reflects diverse approaches and shows how regional ingenuity can address the existential challenges of our time that can only be addressed in a collaborative way.”
