Globe editorial: Trudeau’s Liberal economic outlook is upside down
In the troubled world of the federal Liberal Party, the interest rate cuts made by the Bank of Canada this week are something to brag about.Shortly after the decision, the Liberal Party posted on X that the rate cut was evidence of a “strong economy,” while Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland posted that the bank’s action showed the government’s “economic plan is working.”These optimistic posts are misleading: banks feel they can cut interest rates not because the economy is strong, but because it is weak. (Incidentally, chronic government deficits make banks’ jobs harder, not easier.)The economy’s headroom is expanding, as evidenced…
Climate change will cause the Sunbelt to ‘solar melt’: Ivy Zelman
But that story is now common knowledge, Zelman said in a recent interview, which is why he’s shifting his focus to a problem that many of his colleagues pretend not to see and that no one cares about.”We’re seeing headwinds from climate change,” Zelman told Business Insider in late July. “People are suffering from extreme heat, people are suffering from flooding, damage, lack of insurance. If things don’t get better, what’s going to happen in the long term? I think everybody’s in denial.””Nobody has a good answer” for steadily rising temperaturesClimate change is often treated as a politically sensitive issue,…
What Free Cash Flow Can Tell Us – 16 Undervalued Stocks
PM Images/Getty Images The price/free cash flow ratio indicates whether a company is ready to reward impatient shareholders. By Hyunsoo Lim and Segun Olakoyenikan, edited by William Baldwin You know Tesla is expensive: The stock is trading at 63 times its earnings over the past year, and did you know its cash flow multiple is even more insane, at 10 times its P/E ratio? The metric in question is stock price divided by free cash flow, which compares the market value of the common stock to the free cash a company generates. A low ratio suggests the company is undervalued.…

This REIT will bring income and stability to my portfolio. It’s been a historic month: a gunman nearly assassinated a former president, while the current president surprisingly announced he would not seek reelection. These two events have added to economic uncertainty in the country caused by already high inflation and interest rates, as well as raising concerns that the stock market (which suffered its worst day in years earlier this week) may crash. I don’t know if a crash will happen, but I’m taking steps to prepare for it if it does. I’ve saved up cash and have some defensive…
Daytime traffic is increasing, but it’s not helping commuters
After roads that were eerily quiet during the early months of the pandemic, traffic is back with a vengeance.
