Rep. Jalal Khadem has proposed new legislation that would give Labor Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) inspectors greater access to workplaces in both the public and private sectors.
The bill, titled “Strengthening the Powers of Labor Inspectors,” aims to address growing concerns about labor violations, especially among foreign workers, and ensure a more stable and fair labor market for all.
“The increase in foreign workers in Bahrain calls for stricter enforcement of labour laws,” Khadem said.
“This bill would give LMRA inspectors access to all workplaces, including security-guarded workplaces, government buildings and private businesses, regardless of their nature or type of business.”
The proposed law emphasizes the importance of checking foreign workers’ data and records, including employment contracts, to ensure they have valid work permits and are not violating any regulations.
“It is very important to ensure that foreign workers are employed legally and ethically,” Khadem stressed.
“This will not only protect their rights but also create a fairer and more competitive environment for all companies doing business in Bahrain.”
The proposed law also aims to speed up the process of correcting labour violations and taking legal action against violators.
By empowering inspectors to take immediate action, the LMRA will be able to effectively address violations and deter future violations.
“This bill is an important step towards ensuring a stable and prosperous labour market in Bahrain,” Khadem concluded.
“Protecting the rights of both employers and employees helps create a fairer and more equal society for all.”
The bill is expected to be debated in Parliament in the coming weeks.
