KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) – The close ties between Malaysia and Brunei were clearly on display today as Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah attended the coronation ceremony of His Majesty Ibrahim, the 17th King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara.
The Sultan of Brunei, who celebrated his 78th birthday last Monday, arrived at the palace at 9:34am accompanied by His Majesty Sultan Saleh.
Bahrain’s King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa also attended the ceremony, arriving early at 9.25am.
Upon arrival, the royal guests were received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister and chairman of the Special Committee on Inaugurations Fahmi Fadzil and his wife Azrina Puteri Mohamed Mahyudin.
Upon arrival, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Prince Ahmad were each escorted to the Royal Stage at Palace Square where they received a royal salute while their respective national anthems were played.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Sheikh Hamad are also due to attend a royal dinner at the palace this evening.
The King’s coronation was attended by around 700 guests, including Malay rulers, governors, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, cabinet ministers, foreign leaders and dignitaries.
Sultan Ibrahim was sworn in on January 31 as Malaysia’s 17th King to rule for the next five years.
