A pair of artists who have so much in common that they call each other sisters, Janet Piccola and Jolene Sanborn share a passion for travel and experiencing the world.
This theme continues in the Blue Hole Gallery’s special exhibition, “What a Wonderful World,” opening in August.
Meet the artists and view their work during the First Friday Art Walk Sequim event at the gallery (129 W. Washington St.) on Friday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Photo by Janet Piccola/Ceramicist Janet Piccola, seen here “spinning the wheel,” is one of the artists featured at Blue Hole Gallery in August, along with Jolene Sanborn.
During a recent visit to Turkey, potter Piccola was invited to try out a foot-powered wheel rather than the motorized one she was accustomed to. She returned with new ideas and designs to use in one of her favorite pottery techniques, sgraffito, in which a potter applies a glaze or slip to a piece of pottery, lets it dry, and then carves it away with a pottery carving tool to reveal the underlying layer of color.
Sanborn spent several hours this June on a Canadian lake, listening to the cries of the sandhill cranes and observing the colors of the sunset over the clouds and the lake. Those familiar with her work may have seen her paintings of otters, black labradors, and old log cabins. These paintings, and many more, were inspired by her experiences fly-fishing on Canadian lakes.

Blue Hole Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.
