Spirit Airlines, the low-cost, no-frills airline, has unveiled new premium services as part of a transformation to create a friendlier, more comfortable and more cost-effective travel experience for passengers as part of its efforts to turn around its travel business.
According to a Reuters article, the airline continues to lose money despite the travel boom, and its shares are down 81% into 2024 (but up 5% in midday trading today). Spirit Airlines’ new product was announced a few months after rival Frontier Airlines launched a similar product.
“This is a new chapter in the history of Spirit Airlines, taking low-cost travel to new heights with enhanced options that are unlike anything we’ve offered before,” said Ted Christie, Spirit Airlines president and CEO. “We’ve listened to our customers and are excited to give them what they want — an elevated experience option that offers unmatched value at an affordable price.”
New travel options for Florida-based airlines include:
Go Big offers the best value and includes a Big Front Seat, snacks and drinks (including alcoholic beverages), one carry-on bag, one checked bag, priority check-in and boarding, and streaming access with the fastest Wi-Fi of any U.S.-based airline. Big Front Seat offers increased comfort with a wider seat, more legroom, extra seat cushion, and no middle seat. Go Big will be available to book and experience starting August 16, 2024, with snacks and drinks included, and priority check-in will begin August 27. Go Comfy’s brand new seating option offers increased comfort and space with a guaranteed blocked middle seat, one carry-on bag, one checked bag, priority boarding, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. The Go Comfy option will be available to book starting August 16, 2024, and will begin service on August 27. Go Savvy allows travelers to choose one carry-on or one checked bag and a standard seat when booking. This option is available to book and experience from August 16th. Go is the most affordable option for those who want to keep it simple, with the flexibility to purchase either a checked baggage allowance, standard seat selection, Wi-Fi, or snacks and drinks. Go is available to book and experience from August 16th.
The new boarding process, which begins Aug. 27, will be divided into five groups to reduce boarding times and improve operational performance. Priority boarding will be available to guests who select the Go Big and Go Comfy options, Free Spirit Gold and Silver members, Free Spirit World Elite Mastercard holders, and active-duty U.S. military personnel and their spouses and children if accompanying a military member.
